CHRIS Cornes has been handed the chance to resurrect his career at Worcester City.

The creative midfielder is in pre-season training with the St George’s Lane Club, who released him in March 2007.

Former Wolves trainee Cornes, 22, was at Stourport Swifts last season following spells with Bromsgrove and AFC Telford, as well as playing for Heenans in the Worcester Sunday League.

He is one of several players being looked at by manager Richard Dryden ahead of the new campaign and could get a run out in next Tuesday’s friendly at Stafford Rangers.

Dryden said: “He trained for the first day and I am expecting him in again. He’s just coming to train and that’s all it is at the moment. The plan is for everyone to get half a game at Stafford so we need 22 players.”

Midfielder Dave Bampton has also joined up with the squad, along with youth team midfielder Lee Palmer and striker Louis Bridges, although no deal has been agreed for another season.

Dryden still intends to utilise the club’s academy despite the team’s withdrawal from the FA Youth Cup and Midland Combination because of funding issues with Worcester College of Technology.

A City statement said: “The football club and the college will maintain the coaching links between the football management and sports education professionals to ensure a conduit for talented players to progress to the City first team.”
