MATT Dinsmore could make a surprise return to the Worcester City fold for Saturday's crucial home match against Dorchester Town.
The former academy striker was listed for loan by manager Richard Dryden after a disappointing start to the season, culminating in him being hauled off after 27 minutes of the defeat at Weymouth.
Dinsmore has since been to California and back as he continues his long-term aim to secure a soccer scholarship.
However, Dryden is now prepared to throw the youngster a lifeline following the early-season departures of fellow strikers Martin Butler and Aaron-Moses-Garvey.
Although the City manager is in talks with unnamed forward targets over possible moves ahead of the game, he believes Dinsmore has the ability to make an impact for a team that has only managed four goals so far this term.
“Matt is now back and, if he pulls his finger out, he’s got a chance,” Dryden said. “If his attitude is spot on, he’s our little talisman.
“We are short on strikers until I get a few in so it’s down to Matt now. Things were said after the Weymouth game which will remain private and he’s got a chance to prove he can play.”
Dorchester, beaten 2-1 at Basingstoke on Bank Holiday Monday, arrive at St George’s Lane having lost all four of their away games to date and only two points better off in the Blue Square South table.
With just three points from seven matches, success for City against the Magpies is vital but Dryden is not taking anything for granted against Roy O’Brien’s men.
He said: “We said the same thing about Weymouth but I can take heart from the last two performances at home, apart from not scoring.
“People who know football will know the performances have been good, apart from the last touch.
“If we were getting hammered that would be the time to worry.
“We are more than holding our own against teams we should be beating.”
He added: “Dorchester haven’t got a great away record but I am not thinking about that.
“They will be set up for it but whether it’s Dorchester, Staines or Basingstoke, I expect to get results.”
Midfielder Jordan Fitzpatrick, who scored in Tuesday’s 3-1 Central Conference victory against Stafford Rangers, is once again available for selection following his three-match ban.
Keeper Ben Hinchliffe is set to continue to deputise for Jake Meredith, although the former Team Bath custodian is due to train tonight.
Shabir Khan, who injured his ankle against Woking last month, will not be involved at the weekend and fellow defender Kevin Spencer is expected to be out for a few weeks with a knee injury.
