ST Modwen remain committed to building a new stadium for Worcester City at Nunnery Way.

The property developer is hopeful of submitting plans for a scaled-down ground, on the site alongside the M5, to Worcester City Council in February.

The Blue Square South club will have less than £2 million to fund the project following debt repayment to the Royal Bank of Scotland from the proposed sale of St George’s Lane to Careys New Homes.

Guildhall planners criticised the project in October for relying too much on an enabling development.

The inclusion of a pedestrian footbridge, which would cost around £750,000, also re-mains a sticking point.

But John Dodds, Midlands regional director for St Modwen, said: “We are actively working with Worcester City Council, Worcester City Football Club and a number of other stakeholders to continue to move forward with our plans to deliver a stadium and enabling development at our Nunnery Way site.

“St Modwen is fully committed to developing this site and finding a viable option for the club.

“We are currently having discussions with the council’s planning department about amendments to the planning application to address some of the issues raised, including delivering a football stadium within Worcester City’s current available budget.

“These discussions are progressing well and we are working hard so that the planning application can be considered at the same time as the application from Car-eys New Homes to redevelop St George’s Lane.

“Some of the discussions we are having at present with stakeholders and the council are focused on the infrastructure surrounding the Nunnery Way development site, which includes whether to incorporate a bridge or not.”

Meanwhile, City’s Supporters’ Trust hold their annual meeting tomorrow in the Harry Knowles Lounge (7.30pm).
