ALFIE Carter believes Worcester City have shown they are more than capable of avoiding relegation from Blue Square South.
City head to Havant and Waterlooville today for a crucial encounter as Carl Heeley’s men look to pull away from the drop zone.
Just one point currently separates them from the bottom three and Worcester cannot afford to get cut adrift from the sides immediately above them.
This afternoon’s visit to Westleigh Park (3pm) is a match the players will believe they can win following a battling display in losing 1-0 to higher-ranked county neighbours Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Trophy third round on Monday.
Before that, Heeley’s reign as caretaker manager had seen a commanding 4-0 Trophy win at Carshalton Athletic and a vital 3-1 home league win over fellow strugglers Weymouth.
But it is the performance against Harriers that, according to Carter, will hold City in good stead for the rest of the season.
The left-sided midfielder, who has started 22 games since joining in August, said: “If we play like that, we’ve got a good chance of winning games which we need to do.
“Kidderminster are in the league above but we more than matched them. I thought we played really well and were unlucky not to go in at half-time 2-0 up.
“We gave it our all and we’re disappointed we didn’t get something out of the game. We had a few chances and didn’t take them. We have got Havant today so hopefully we can put on a good performance and get the right result.”
Carter also reckons the players responded to the largest gate of the season at the Lane on Monday, 1,653, and will use that to their advantage in their battle against the drop.
He added: “The crowd were right behind us so that will help us with the remaining games at home as well.”
