CARL Heeley says Worcester City have heaped the pressure on relegation rivals Lewes with their victory over Maidenhead United.
Craig Wilding’s ninth goal of the season handed his team a 1-0 win at St George’s Lane last night to open up a five-point gap over the third-bottom Rooks in Blue Square South.
The Dripping Pan outfit, who surrendered a 3-0 lead over City at the weekend, have two games in hand, one of which is at home to Eastleigh tonight.
But they also have an inferior goal difference and Heeley reckons it will be tough for them to make up the ground.
He said: “I thought we were superb for the last 20 minutes on Saturday and we gave ourselves a springboard with the character the boys showed.
“We had to back that up with a home win and five points is a big gap. The pressure is back on Lewes now to go and win their two games and that’s a big ask when you’re down there.”
Heeley was also delighted with his side’s efforts in securing only their sixth home league win of the campaign.
“It was thoroughly deserved,” he said. “It was great to see us defend properly for 90 minutes and I thought we looked solid. In all honesty, we should have been more convincing.
“I thought Craig Wilding and Matt Dinsmore worked so hard up front and it’s nice to see Craig get a goal - he got his just rewards for his hard work.”
