IF Worcester City are to further boost their survival chances on Saturday, they will have to win back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

The St George’s Lane side have only won seven times in 32 attempts in Blue Square South and are yet to follow up one victory with another.

After defeating Maidenhead United 1-0 on Monday, they host Hampton and Richmond Borough looking to put that statistic right (3pm).

Carl Heeley’s men looked set to break the sequence last month when, having produced a stunning comeback to beat Woking 3-2, they led Braintree 2-1 before succumbing to two late goals.

They have, however, managed the feat over league and cup competitions — the last seeing them beat Carshalton in the FA Trophy after defeating Weymouth in January — and will need to produce a repeat on Saturday.

“We have had a good week but are far from out of the woods and have still got a lot to do,” Heeley said.

“It’s another great opportunity to get a win and it would be good to get back-to-back victories.

“It’s difficult to string wins together when you have been struggling all season but we have got to do things right.

“Apart from against Havant and Waterlooville, I think the performances have been consistent.

“We haven’t defended as well as I would have liked but the boys gained a lot of confidence after the defensive display the other night.”

City’s quest to avoid the drop was aided last night when third-from-bottom Lewes lost 2-1 at Eastleigh, leaving the Rooks five points adrift with only one game in hand.

Heeley, though, knows his charges cannot afford to rest on their laurels and will expect them to be fully focused against the Londoners.

He said: “Lewes have dropped points but really it’s about us. We have got to concentrate on our own jobs and can’t rely on other teams.

“The situation at the moment is in our own hands. Lewes have got to win their game in hand just to be two points behind us. If we can win on Saturday and results go for us, then there’s clear daylight and that’s asking them to climb a mountain.

“But there’s still plenty of twists of turns.”

Striker Alfie Carter is set to return after missing Monday through work commitments, while left-back Shabir Khan plays his last match before a four-game ban.

There are still question marks over the centre of defence with Mark Clyde (knee), captain Tom Kemp (shoulder) and Wayne Daniel (back) all struggling.

Daniel is the more likely of the trio to feature.
