Heeley hot under the collar over discipline

CARL Heeley slammed Worcester City’s poor discipline following their 1-0 defeat to Hampton and Richmond Borough.

Trailing to Barrie Matthews’ 84th-minute penalty, Rob Elvins was shown a straight red card for violent conduct during a flare-up as Worcester pushed for an equaliser.

Elvins now faces a four-game ban — three for the red card and an extra match because he has already been sent off this season, ironically against the same opponents.

He is set to miss the matches against St Albans, Maidenhead, Staines and Bath City before returning for the final three games of the season.

The incident comes barely two weeks after left-back Shabir Khan was sent off against Newport County, also earning him a four-game suspension.

Caretaker manager Heeley fumed: “I didn’t see the incident but what I’m not happy about is the lack of discipline.

“That has cost us all season, whether that’s a lack of discipline with challenges and getting sent off or being able to defend for 90 minutes. It’s cost us dearly all season and it doesn’t look like it’s going to go away.

“You can’t legislate for injuries but you can’t deal with stupid sending offs that are our own players’ actions.

“I’m not prepared to stand for it because between Sha-bir and Elvins they will have missed 14 games which is unacceptable when we’ve got our backs to the wall with a small squad and we’re battling to stay in the league.”

Elvins was also at the centre of penalty appeal which went against the hosts in second-half stoppage-time and Heeley was left perplexed at the decision.

He said: “It’s one of three things — it’s either a corner, a penalty or a yellow card to Elvins for diving and the referee gave none of them.

“I can’t see how that can be the case, that is as clear a stonewall penalty as I’ve ever seen.”

But the City boss, who also admitted captain Tom Kemp was not fully fit, was more concerned at his team’s lack of cutting edge.

He said: “The performance wasn’t good enough irrespective of the penalties, we did not do enough — we were poor.

“The game’s over now, we’ve just got to move on to the next one.

“It’s tough but we’ve got to pick ourselves up.

“I’m sure the teams around us are not going to give up and we can’t give up either.

“We are in a scrap and we’ve got to roll our sleeves up and show what character we’ve got.”

I wonder how our cutting edge is getting on at Redditch?

You can hardly refer to Marco Adaggio as a cutting edge. I have stood on the terraces at SGL for the last two seasons and marvelled at how he can contrive to miss the simplest of chances - most of which were the difference between one or three points and no points at all.
Some of the chances he`s missed begger belief. I find the prospect of a Facebook campaign to keep him at the Lane totally mystifying.
Richard Dryden`s faith in Adaggio, Wilding and Dinsmore is a major factor in why City are where they are.

In relative terms the records show him to be our most prolific goal scorer

Not a good day for City all round.

1. It has never failed to baffle me why, when an opposing player is quite obviously injured and in pain (as was Hampton's keeper), certain fans hurl abuse at him.

2. The way in which the city stretcher bearer and steward ambled over to the injured player. hands in pocket, beggers belief!

3. Hampton were not a good side but even with a keeper who could hardly move city could not even muster a shot at goal.

4. As for another city player getting sent off... how is this playing for the team? Tit for tat retaliation and hissy fits are for the Sunday leagues.

5. Something else I find frustrating at the lane is, why do men in their 60's and 70's feel they need to hurl foul mouth abuse at the officials and players? (despite many young children being in the vacinity).

The abuse aimed at the linesman was nothing to do with football it was personal and small minded... a sad soul obviously playing to a crowd.

On the field...

This was another game that we really should not have lost. Lack of discipline... absolutely!

As regards Adaggio, he has indeed scored most goals over the past two seasons but not anywhere near enough - and unfortunately has missed far too many also.In short he, along with Wilding and Dinsmore are nowhere near good enough to get City in a decent league position.
In fact Dryden has left a legacyof a pretty poor squad that Carl Heeley can do little to improve at this stage of the season given City`s financial position.
I quite agree Dunnock - the more mature members of the crowd make me squirm most matches with the abuse they feel entitled to shout at officials, injured opponents and poorly performing City players (particularly as they are only a very few years older than me)Best not to say anything to them in case they attack you with a walking stick.
