WORCESTER City will give a pre-season trial to centre-half Dene Whittal-Williams.

The defender was on the books at Stourport Swifts last season but will be given his chance to impress manager Carl Heeley during the programme of friendlies.

The St George’s Lane team return to training on Saturday as they begin preparations for the new Blue Square Bet North campaign.

Assistant boss Mark Clyde is the only recognised centre-half signed up for next season although 2009/10 top-scorer Rob Elvins is expected to be used in that position.

Heeley said of Whittal-Williams, who has also played for Kendal in the Unibond Premier Division: “I had a very good chat with him and he wants to prove he’s good enough.

“If there are local players who are good enough then I am more than happy to work with them.

“He has the right physique so we will have a look at him and see how it goes. He’s desperate to prove himself at this level.”

Heeley has 12 players in his squad and will be adding to it over the next few weeks as he trials players during the seven warm-up matches, which start at Stratford Town on Saturday, July 17.

A goalkeeper remains top of the priority list and at least two are due to join up as pre-season progresses.

The City boss added: “We are going to get players in and have a look at them. We will run the rule over a few before we make any further decisions.”

Meanwhile, City’s league fixtures are due to be released this afternoon.
