MANAGER Carl Heeley reckons Worcester City’s draw at Stafford Rangers was a case of what might have been.
Matt Birley put the visitors in front 16 minutes into the Marston Road encounter but they were pegged back when Chris Sterling turned home Craig McAughtrie’s header.
The point took City’s tally to 10 from a possible 15 so far this season, but Heeley felt his team should have taken all three.
He said: “We’re unbeaten away from home so it’s a good point, but it’s slightly disappointing because I felt at half-time we were good value for our lead and I couldn’t see Stafford scoring in all honesty.
“I thought a set-piece with the big lad McAughtrie was the only way they were going to score against us and it proved to be. We highlighted it and we’ve got caught by it unfortunately which is slightly disappointing.
“We have lost games like that inthe past and we’ve got a point away from home, but I think they should be disappointed because I feel that if we had just been a little bit more disciplined on the set-piece we would have won the game.”
He added: “I wouldn’t say we dominated the first-half — I thought we were in control and were good value for at least a one-goal lead and it possibly should have been more.
“We allowed Stafford to take the initiative in the second-half and they’re the home side so you’ve got to give them some credit.
“The pitch was quite heavy and the boys were saying they felt quite leggy at the end. On the whole, we’d rather take one than none.”
Heeley was also full of praise for his defence, particularly the efforts of Tom Evans who filled in for the injured Rob Elvins.
The City boss said: “I thought Tom Evans, for a young boy, was commanding, very brave and he went and attacked the ball. That was good to see.
“We’re down to the bare bones a little bit at the back but I think Tom has proved what a good player he’s going to be.”
