LANE legend Danny McDonnell could be set for a surprise return to Worcester City as a player-coach.

The 38-year-old, who retired two years ago after playing more than 350 games in breaking the club’s appearance record for goalkeepers, is in talks with manager Carl Heeley.

He has been sounded out primarily as a coach but the City boss has not ruled out the possibility of using McDonnell as back-up in the first-team squad.

Jimmy Dormand looks set to be the number one choice for the new campaign but ex-Tipton Town stopper Matt Sargeant and former Blackburn trainee Ryan Robinson have both been given chances to impress during pre-season.

Dean Coleman, who made 21 appearances last term, opted against returning to the club, while Tim Sandercombe has joined Blue Square Bet South club Truro City following his knee injury.

Heeley said: “We have had discussions with Danny Mc-Donnell regarding coming in to bring his experience and do a bit of coaching with the younger keepers.”

The Worcester boss wants two keepers on his books to avoid the situation of having to draft in cover for injuries, as happened with Sander-combe last season.
