WORCESTER City joint-boss Carl Heeley has signed defender Sam Minihan and midfielder George Nash as he continues to build ahead of the new season.

And teenage defender Kieran Morris could join them after starring in the 2-0 victory at Bedworth United last night.

Both Minihan and Nash were playing for Loughborough in the Midland League last season.

Morris was on the books of Brentford and spent time on loan at Maidstone United and Stourbridge.

“We’ve signed George and Sam who are both good footballers and have great attitudes,” Heeley said.

“They will be good acquisitions for the club.

“Sam is so versatile and George just doesn’t give the ball away – he has a good pedigree and great feet. We are delighted to get them on board.

“I thought young Kieran Morris was outstanding again. His reading of the game was excellent and I will be having a chat with him to see if we can agree something. He’s only 19 and he was superb against a good Bedworth side.”

Goals from strike pair Tristian Dunkley and Dan Nti wrapped up the win at the Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division outfit but City had to work hard for the victory on a slick 3G pitch.

Heeley added: “It was a great workout with lots of positives. I thought for the first 15 minutes we were a little bit sloppy but we grew into the game and got stronger and stronger.”

Midfielder Connor Gator twice forced home keeper Denham Hinds into saves before the breakthrough came eight minutes before the break.

Dunkley exchanged passes with Ryan Rowe on the edge of the area and then steered his shot beyond the Bedworth keeper.

Minihan was denied by an excellent save on 76 minutes with Nti, one of seven second half substitutes, seeing an effort scrambled around the post seconds later.

But it was from the resulting corner that City doubled their lead, Ellis Deeney’s kick being headed into the net by Nti.

Worcester played out the closing stages with just ten men when, having made all their changes, Morris picked up a knock and sat out the final ten minutes.

And Bedworth almost made their extra man count when midfielder Luke Rowe curled a free-kick around the wall only to be denied by the far post.

Heeley said the only negatives from the game were the knocks to Morris and fellow defender Kyle Haynes who was substituted just before half-time.

The joint manager said: “Kyle went over on his ankle a little and we hope that it’s nothing too serious. But at least these have happened early in pre-season so they should be fine.”

City have two games on Saturday – at Midland League side Coventry Sphinx (11am) and against Southern League Premier newboys Stratford Town (3pm).

Stratford's ground is not available so the match will be played at Cryfield Sports Pavilion, University of Warwick, Leighfield Road, Coventry CV4 7EQ.
