HOTSHOT Lee Hughes fired in a last-gasp winner to take Worcester City through 1-0 against Solihull Moors at the end of a dramatic FA Cup clash at Aggborough.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time until, with 95 minutes on the clock, a short corner was worked to the former Kidderminster Harriers striker, who stabbed the ball home to set up a fourth qualifying round trip to National League high-fliers Gateshead.

It was no more than City deserved after dominating the chances but Solihull’s on-loan Aston Villa keeper Benjamin Siegrist looked to have kept them at bay until Hughes’ last-gasp decider.

The visitors had started the better as they looked to replicate their excellent opening spell in the first game.

On four minutes, City defender Tom Sharpe missed his header allowing Stefan Moore in on goal but, with just keeper Nathan Vaughan blocking his way, he guided his shot against the inside of the post with the ball then rolling across the area and out for a goal kick.

Three minutes later, the visitors went close again and Vaughan did well to push Ryan Beswick's shot around the foot of the post.

But for the remainder of the half it was the home side who created the bulk of the chances with Siegrist called on to keep them at bay.

On 18 minutes he did well to keep out a low 25-yard drive from Conor Gater before denying Sean Geddes, who also tried his luck from distance.

The Aggborough side had appeals for a penalty turned down on 26 minutes when Shaun Harrad and Solihull’s Michael Nottingham tangled inside the area moments before Dan Nti was denied by another Siegrist save.

Just after the half-hour mark, the visitors forced another save from Vaughan when Moore latched on to a Jack Byrne cross before City created a decent chance at the other end when Hughes and Harrad beat the offside trap only for the final pass to go astray.

Worcester were forced into a change at the end of the half when defender Jamie Smith and Byrne clashed heads, leaving the City teenager suffering a head injury that resulted in him being carried off on a stretcher.

The chances dried up in the early stages of the second half but on 58 minutes Byrne let fly with a fierce shot that Vaughan did well to keep out.

Three minutes later, the action switched to the other end when Hughes curled an effort just the wrong side of the post.

City’s leading scorer went closer still 10 minutes later with a splendid volley on the turn that Siegrist did well to push over the crossbar.

With 10 minutes to go, the striker had an effort cleared off the line by Liam Daly but it was Hughes who finally found a way through, firing into the roof of the net from six yards from the injury-time corner.
