WORCESTER City’s equaliser was perhaps through more luck than judgement but Amadou Bakayoko’s late header showed that fortune favours the brave.

Trailing 1-0 after Dave Morgan’s 82nd-minute strike and with the final whistle fast approaching, Alex Gudger delivered a long, hopeful ball into Bakayoko.

At this point, Nuneaton Town’s defence appeared to have the situation covered as the striker, who had his back to goal, went up for a header.

But, with a little assistance from the wind, Bakayoko managed loop the ball in behind a bamboozled Lathaniel Rowe-Turner before putting his neck on the line to nod it past keeper Jordan Smith.

There was arguably a stroke of luck about the substitute’s 90th minute flick-on, turn and finish but it was the least City deserved at a blustery Liberty Way.

Eleven places may have separated the two sides before kick-off but, apart from a 10-minute spell in the second half, Worcester were more than a match for play-off chasing Town.

The high winds led to a frustrating opening period as Nuneaton often struggled to clear their lines and the visitors failed to fashion any clear cut chances.

In fact, the only time they troubled Smith was when Nathan Vaughan launched a free-kick from inside his own half and his opposite number did well to claim the ball as it moved in the air.

City knew they would face a gale when they swapped sides for the second half but, with Wayne Thomas returning alongside Tom Sharpe at centre-half, they looked comfortable at the back.

While the duo restricted former Premier League striker Marlon Harewood to one shot on goal, Gudger was excelling at left-back.

He hardly put a foot wrong defensively and almost set up the opener as his diagonal cross found Sam Minihan, who unleashed a powerful strike that Smith was equal to.

Worcester were on top but, with no goals to show for their efforts, there was always a chance Nuneaton would strike.

And, with eight minutes left, the hosts delivered that blow.

After Vaughan made a couple of strong saves to deny Elliott Whitehouse and Wesley McDonald, Morgan made it third time lucky with a thumping effort which flew into the top corner.

City quickly conceded two in quick succession at Chorley last week and that was almost the case at Nuneaton.

Whitehouse poked the ball through to Joe Ironside but, fortunately for the Blue and Whites, his shot clattered the upright.

Worcester then made them pay for that miss as Bakayoko, who was perhaps unlucky to lose his place in the starting line-up to Lee Hughes, came to the rescue with a last-minute leveller.

Connor Gater could have won it in injury-time when Bakayoko cut the ball back to the unmarked midfielder but his shot was easily saved by Smith.
