ANY point is precious for Worcester City in their fight for survival so Jordan Murphy’s late equaliser at North Ferriby United will be well received.

But victories are needed at this stage of the season and draw-specialists City must find that winning formula before it is too late.

Considering North Ferriby are riding high in Vanarama National League North and had all the momentum after coming from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, Worcester did well to come away with a share of the spoils.

But, having put themselves on course for their first victory in seven matches thanks to first-half goals from Deon Burton and Lee Hughes, this could be deemed as another missed opportunity.

And, with two points now separating themselves and the relegation area, 18th-placed City need to start converting these chances.

The draw at Grange Lane was their sixth in seven games, with four of those coming against teams in the top six – Boston United, Harrogate Town, Solihull Moors and now North Ferriby.

That’s not bad going but the facts are they have only claimed six of the 21 points on offer, which has left them in a perilous position and in desperate need of a victory to edge them closer to safety.

What City have rediscovered, though, is their fire-power as Hughes, Burton and Kyle Perry proved a real handful for the North Ferriby defence.

From the first minute until just before the break, the visitors’ decision to lump the ball up to their experienced front three was paying off.

Keeper Nathan Vaughan was pinning Ferriby back with a series of booming kicks up field but it still needed a touch of Premier League class to get them off the mark on seven minutes.

The hosts could only clear Vaughan’s delivery as far as former Derby County striker Burton, who spotted Adam Nicklin off his line before lofting the ball over his head from 30 yards out.

With Liam King bursting forward and Tom Denton winning almost every header, North Ferriby also caused City’s back four problems.

But Worcester, who welcomed back Tyler Weir following his two-month ban from football, were holding firm and grabbed a second in first-half injury-time.

Again, a long boot forward was North Ferriby’s undoing before Perry headed the ball into the path of Hughes, who tucked it away.

But, just when they appeared to have earned themselves a two-goal cushion at half-time, North Ferriby struck straight back.

Vaughan produced a brilliant stop to deny Denton from close range but Sam Minihan pulled back Nathan Hotte when he was about to shoot and King dispatched the spot-kick.

North Ferriby levelled when replacement Danny Clarke slotted the ball home after City’s defence were caught napping on 57 minutes before Denton put his side in front.

This time, Connor Gater was at fault as he headed the ball straight to Denton, who had time and space to apply the finish.

Suddenly, City were staring down the barrel at a confidence-sapping defeat.

But Carl Heeley’s and Matt Gardiner’s men refused to give in and with three minutes left they clinched another draw when Murphy found the bottom corner.
