Bookies oppose success for City

WORCESTER City have been priced at 22-1 to win Blue Square Bet North next season.

The St George’s Lane side, who finished seventh in 2011-12, are 12th favourites for the title on the list compiled by sponsors Blue Square.

Carl Heeley’s team surprised many by defying their tags as relegation fodder by enjoying one of the most successful campaigns in the club’s recent history.

However, the bookies appear to be guarded against City repeating the feat and have placed them to finish in mid-table.

New boys Chester are the 4-1 favourites to claim back-to-back promotions, while Halifax Town are second (7-1) and Gainsborough Trinity third (13-2).

Brackley Town and Oxford City, both promoted from the Evo-Stik Southern League, are predicted to finish above Worcester.

At the other end of the scale, Vauxhall Motors and Solihull Moors are both 100-1 outsiders, while Corby Town are 80-1 shots.

Hyde were 33/1 for the title. last season.
City were 40/1.

Interestingly, this year the odds but City behind a number of teams they finished ahead of in the league last year - like Boston, Altrincham and Droylsden.

Aiming for year-on-year improvement, Carl and Matt will no doubt be aiming to keep ahead of those sides, plus do better than a couple of other higher-placed sides, like Stalybridge.

22/1 for the title is available as an 'each way bet', which means 11/1 on City achieving a top three finish. That may be just beyond City (with Chester, Halifax and Guiseley strong candidates), but a top five finish could be a realistic target. And tryig for that would be a very exciting year, and one that would hopefully attract a couple of hundred more fans.

Sorry - the each way bet is 11/2 on a top three finish, not 11/1 as stated above.
