THE FA Cup second-round replay against Scunthorpe United will surely go down as one of the most dramatic games in Worcester City’s history.

Despite Scunthorpe being three entire leagues higher than City, the run-around Carl Heeley’s men gave their northern rivals when they faced them at home meant expectations were high they could go through at home.

That faith was in full show at Aggborough with every home stand packed to the rims with very, very vocal supporters.

Much could be said about the regular 90 minutes — from the gut-wrenching moment when the visitors went 1-0 up in stoppage-time right at the end of the first-half to the palpable feeling of hope regained when City equalised in the 69th minute.

But all anybody who was at the game is going to remember is the dreaded — and very, very long — penalty shoot-out.

As the shoot-out went on and on the one thing that was noticeable was how the City fans did not tire despite even the players clearly getting weary.

But ultimately there had to be a loser and this time it wasn’t to be for City. While many supporters would clear out the moment their team lost, every one of the thousands of City fans stayed to cheer their heroes off.

While it would have been wonderful to make it through to the third round, the fact City held a team three leagues higher than them for so long and made it so far is something to be proud of.

And the massive swell of support for the team has been magnificent. Let’s hope it keeps going. We’ll always have that Coventry City win in the first round.
