WORCESTER City are today set to open talks with two potential signings ahead of Sunday’s Conference North home match against Bradford Park Avenue (3pm).

The Blue and Whites have made seven-day approaches, which expire today, for two unnamed targets in a bid to strengthen their squad.

Manager Carl Heeley has made no secret of his desire to add a right-back and striker following the departure of George Williams and City’s failure to score in three matches.

Mike Symons was the last Worcester player to hit the target, in the 1-0 win at Stalybridge on December 20.

“There’s a couple of seven-day approaches in for players that will allow us to speak to them today,” he said. “I am aiming to get at least one in for Sunday.”

City are aiming to kick-start their season following last Sunday’s postponement against Guiseley at Aggborough.

Not having played since the 0-0 draw at Hednesford Town on New Year’s Day has allowed keeper Nathan Vaughan to return to fitness after missing the last two matches with a groin injury.

However, defender Shabir Khan remains sidelined by a groin problem, although it is not thought to be a recurrence of the injury that required summer surgery.

Despite only completing two fixtures over the holiday period, Worcester remain within touching distance of the play-offs and have games in hand on the teams above them.

Heeley said: “We could really do without losing any more fixtures, we really need to try to get some games played, certainly at home so let’s hope the weather is kind to us.

“Only losing five games going into the new year isn’t bad so it’s just about trying to pick up as many points as we can.

“We go out aiming to win all of the games. When we play teams at the top of the league we set out to beat them.”

Bradford are second-from-bottom in the table and lost 4-3 at Leamington last Sunday, fighting back from 2-0 and 4-2 down.

But Heeley is not taking anything for granted as City aim to continue their impressive record at Aggborough, which has seen them lose just once in the league since last February.

The City boss said: “We are at home and Bradford have struggled this season but we know from last year they are a capable side and have got some good players so we have got to be right on it.”
