WORCESTER City have clinched their third summer signing with the capture of centre-half Alex Gudger from Rugby Town.

The 22-year-old captained the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central side during a three-year spell.

Gudger, a left-footed central defender who impressed against Worcester in FA Cup ties over the last two campaigns, decided to leave Rugby.

City joint bosses Carl Heeley and Matt Gardiner made their move after already adding left-back Darren Campion from Hednesford Town and striker Ryan Rowe from Brackley Town.

Heeley said: “Alex is a player we have monitored very closely over the past three or four years. We feel he has always demonstrated the ability to play at a higher level and we are delighted to now give him the opportunity to do so.

"He is strong in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet. Being left-footed, that always brings a nice balance to a central defensive partnership.

"We feel Alex has a lot of improvement still to come in his game and the set-up at the club will maximise that potential.”

Gudger signed for Rugby in August 2012 after impressing during pre-season and rapidly made an impact at centre-half, having originally played as a full-back in his youth career.

He brought pace and ability with the ball to the centre of defence and collected three player-of-the-season awards in his first campaign with the Warwickshire club.

Gudger was made club captain for 2013-14 when he enjoyed another strong season.

He originally progressed through the youth ranks at Nuneaton Town and featured fleetingly in their first team as they won promotion to non-league's top flight.

In total, he made 111 appearances for Rugby and scored nine goals.

Talks are ongoing with a number of other potential recruits for Worcester and the Aggborough-based National League North club are hopeful of announcing further additions in the coming days and weeks.
