THE first piece of silverware is already in the trophy cabinet but Worcester City joint manager Carl Heeley is still looking to add to his squad ahead of the new National League North campaign.

Goals from Daniel Nti, Sean Geddes and Tristian Dunkley secured a 3-1 Worcestershire FA Senior Cup victory over old rivals Redditch United.

The final, at Bromsgrove Sporting’s Victoria Ground, also gave Heeley the chance to run the rule over 30-year-old former Cheltenham Town and Port Vale striker Ashley Vincent.

He said: “We are looking for another forward and Ashley has a super pedigree.

“He said he was available so we’ve had a look at him and I’m sure he will have a few more minutes on Tuesday (at Rushall Olympic). Let’s see if he is the player we are looking for. I’ve had good reports from a few people so let’s see how he progresses.”

Vincent played the final half-hour alongside fellow substitute Dunkley and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the dying seconds when his volley from the edge of the area was met by a fine save from Reds keeper Josh Moreton.

City made the perfect start when, on six minutes, Geddes whipped a free-kick into the area and Nti’s faintest of headers was enough to steer the ball beyond the keeper.

Redditch recovered from that setback and, after former City target Jamey Osborne had been denied by a good save from Nathan Vaughan, they levelled with a 17th-minute Luke Shearer penalty given when a free-kick had struck an arm in the wall.

The Southern League Premier Division side continued to press but Worcester went in at the break with a slender lead.

With a minute of the half remaining and after Ryan Rowe and Nti had shots blocked in quick succession, Geddes drilled in a 20-yard effort.

The second period lacked the pace of the first with City’s back three of Clayton McDonald, Kieran Morris and Alex Gudger outstanding.

With their opponents pushing for an equaliser, Worcester added an 87th-minute third on the break when substitute Dunkley chipped keeper Moreton.

Heeley added: “The main thing is fitness, being ready for a fortnight’s time and picking up no injuries.

“They are the main factors but we’re certainly not going to pass up on the chance to win some silverware. It gives you the feel-good factor and hopefully it can be the platform for the season.

“In the first half, Redditch really put a shift in and were harassing us all over the park. But we controlled the game in the second-half and the quality of the players shone through.

“We had a nice blend in defence. We have a young lad (Morris) who has had a good grounding at a pro club, a lad (Gudger) who has been doing incredibly well at a couple of levels below and you’ve another (McDonald) who has been there and done it and has the experience.

“I still think there’s more to come from the players but they’re getting fitter and fitter and sharper and sharper. It’s all about finishing off the opportunities we create and if we do that then we could have a decent season.”
