STRIKER Ashley Vincent could be in line to make his full Worcester City debut at home to Tamworth tonight (7.45pm).

The 30-year-old came off the bench to help his side earn a 1-1 draw at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, supplying the cross for Ryan Rowe to score within two minutes of entering the fray.

And with Dan Nti feeling the effect of a kick on the knee picked up in pre-season, joint City managers Carl Heeley and Matt Gardiner may turn to the experienced frontman for what should be a tough Aggborough clash.

Heeley said: “You want impact like that – you want players to go on and create something. It was probably his second touch of the ball and he has got us a goal.

“He is a good weapon to have and we are happy to have him at the club.”

Vincent only agreed on a deal a couple of days before Saturday’s league opener but had impressed in his two pre-season appearances that saw him claim a Worcestershire Senior Cup winners medal and score with a thundering long-range effort.

Darren Campion was a surprise inclusion in the side at Gainsborough after he recovered from a groin strain.

He may be rested for tonight’s Midlands derby clash, however, with Kyle Haynes and Tyler Weir possibly filling the wingback roles.

Not that City are struggling for personnel as Heeley explained after leaving two of last season’s regulars out of the squad altogether on Saturday.

“You can only name 16,” he said. “Rob Elvins had an injury in pre-season and Danny Jackman has been on holiday so we just thought that the other boys were a little bit sharper than they were.

“We left them out but they will be big players for us — you can’t leave quality players like that out of the side for long and they will force their way back in.

“Darren Campion was really tired and Dan Nti had a knock on his knee against Blues that was tightening up a little bit. Ryan Rowe was also tired but that happens and we had enough players to bring on fresh legs – that’s the beauty of having a big squad.

“Look at the number of players who get injured and the number of games you have – you need to be able to move it around a little. You cannot manage on a squad of 16 players.”

One player certain to miss out is summer signing Sam Minihan who is still on holiday but is expected to be available for Saturday’s match with Lowestoft Town at Aggborough.

Heeley added: “Tamworth have started well and it will be a good game.

“They are one of the favourites, and rightly so, so we will see how it goes.”
