WORCESTER City defender Tyler Weir is hoping to win his race to regain fitness and lock horns with former team-mate Matt Done in Saturday’s FA Cup first round clash at Bramall Lane (3pm).

Weir was a team-mate with Sheffield United’s Done when the two played in the Football League for now defunct Hereford United.

Weir is recovering from a foot injury and is hoping to gain selection for the mouth-watering tie.

“I don’t think we could have asked for a better draw,” said Weir, a key player in City’s run to the second round last season.

“I had an assessment on my foot injury five weeks ago and I am hoping to be involved.”

He added: “I have never played at Bramall Lane but my mate, Matt Done, plays for Sheffield United.

“I spoke to him after the draw was made and I just hope I am fit for the game.”

Weir knows the magic of the FA Cup in Sheffield – he was part of Hereford United’s squad who lost 4-1 at Wednesday – Sheffield United’s arch rivals – in a fourth-round tie at Hillsborough in 2011.

“Sadly, I didn’t get on to the field – I was on the bench – but it was a fantastic experience and the atmosphere was special,” he recalled.

City have already knocked out Holbeach United, Solihull Moors and Gateshead during this season’s cup run. Weir is expecting Worcester’s fans to travel in their masses for the showdown with the League One Blades.

“We took more than 3,000 to Coventry City at the same stage last season and I am hoping we will take 4,000 fans to Sheffield,” said Weir.

“I thought we were going to pull Coventry City again in the draw but when Sheffield United came out of the hat I knew it would be us against them.”

Weir insists Worcester’s players will not be overwhelmed at the prospect of facing the Blades, the four-time former FA Cup winners.

“We will be going to Sheffield United to win,” said Weir.

“No-one expected us to achieve anything at Coventry last season but we were the better team. We will be going to Bramall Lane with the same mentality as we took to Coventry. From a club point of view, it might even be favourable to get a draw.”

Worcester City director Mike Davis is keen to know the number of unofficial City coaches travelling to Sheffield.

South Yorkshire Police want supporters to arrive without delays and for coaches to be parked safely.

Organisers of coaches should e-mail their details to mikedavis@worcestercityfc.co.uk.
