JOINT-manager Carl Heeley was delighted to see his side’s game-plan come together as Worcester City “battered” second-placed North Ferriby United.

Having scored more goals than any other side in Vanarama National League North, the visitors were expected to stroll to a fifth successive victory.

But, after stunning them with two first half goals from Shaun Donnellan, City’s defence held firm to claim a well-deserved three points from a 2-0 victory.

“People might go away and ask how are North Ferriby second in the league,” Heeley said.

“Well, don’t be fooled by that. They are a good side and I think our boys have to take a lot of credit as we have set out with a game-plan, worked hard on it and stopped them doing what has made them effective and thoroughly deserved our win.

“Tom Denton (forward) is very important to them but we have not let him impose himself on us.

“With Tom Sharpe, Wayne Thomas and Shaun dropping in on his toes, we made him ineffective and I think we worked very hard to stop the supply into him.

“It was a comfortable and comprehensive win.”

Heeley said having Sharpe and Thomas back in the heart of City’s defence and goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan back from suspension made a big difference.

“It is a strong back five and I thought we rarely looked like being cut open and conceding,” he said.

“Once we got ourselves ahead I knew North Ferriby were going to have to work very hard to get themselves back into the game because of the experience, the game management and the know-how we have got and it proved to be the case.

“To be fair to Billy (Heard) and Mark (Carroll) (the manager and assistant of North Ferriby), they have said, ‘You’ve thoroughly deserved that win as you’ve battered us’, and that was nice to hear.

“All of the players stood out for me. I thought they were magnificent.”
