WORCESTER City have set their sights on a top-half finish in Vanarama National League North after claiming the scalps of promotion-chasing AFC Fylde and North Ferriby United.

Shaun Donnellan struck twice in the first half as the Blue and Whites backed up their 3-2 win at AFC Fylde with a 2-0 victory over second-placed North Ferriby at Aggborough on Saturday.

The back-to-back wins have seen City climb two places to 16th and move six points clear of the drop zone with two games in hand on third-from-bottom Brackley Town.

City host mid-table Alfreton on Saturday (3pm) and joint-manager Carl Heeley believes there is no reason why his side can’t push on to secure a place in the higher echelons of the league.

“There have been times I have been manager here when you start having doubts and thinking, ‘Have we got enough and can we achieve what we need to achieve?’,” said Heeley, whose side lost their first two games of 2016.

“But I don’t think that at the moment. We will be fine and I have always said that as there is more than enough in our squad to show we can finish in the top half of this division.”

Heeley believed his side were in a false position and admitted having the likes of the experienced Tom Sharpe, Wayne Thomas, Nathan Vaughan and Lee Hughes available was crucial to improving their league placing.

“Football is a funny game as you would have looked at the three games preceding Fylde and thought we would have got points from those,” he said. “But we haven’t because we have not done things right.

“When we do things right, we are a good side and the position we are in is a false one.

“The saying is ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but we have to look at Alfreton, the players available to us and make changes.

“When you have got the strength in the squad we have got now, you can make those changes. Where we are in the league has been a reflection of not having players available to us.

“As I have always said,if we can get our best players available to us often enough, we will get more than enough points and will fly up the table.

“This is why I get frustrated when you get two or three results that don’t go your way and people start turning on you because I know what we have got.

“I know what we need to do and the players know and we have got 100 per cent belief in them.”
