TYLER Weir looks set to be handed a surprise recall by Worcester City just days after returning from a two-month suspension.

The full-back was hit with a ban from all football activity by the FA after failing to declare he had been approached over match-fixing.

Joint-boss Carl Heeley said he was delighted to have the 25-year-old back as he took part in his first training session last night since the suspension kicked in.

And Heeley hinted he might be tempted to play the versatile Weir at National League North high-fliers North Ferriby United on Saturday (3pm) as 18th-placed City aim for their first win in more than a month.

“The good thing about Tyler is he is a fit lad as he looks after himself, so I am sure he can slot straight back in,” Heeley said.

“It was a total football ban, so he has not been able to train which has been frustrating for him.

“But I am sure he will be champing at the bit to get back out on the pitch and obviously we are looking forward to having him back because he is a very good player and can play in a number of positions.

“We will pick what we consider to be our strongest side because it is going to be a tough game against Ferriby.

“But I am sure Tyler will play a part in one or maybe even both of our next two games. It is a massive boost to have him back.”

The FA have stressed Weir, who has made 23 appearances for Worcester this season, was not involved in any attempt to fix a match and did not accept monies or bribes.

But Weir admitted to breaching two FA rules in 2012 and 2013 as he failed to immediately report being contacted by Delroy Facey, a former team-mate at the now-defunct Hereford United, over match-fixing.

During Weir’s time away from the game, skipper Danny Jackman and Alex Gudger played at left-back before midfielder Connor Gater was asked to play there against Harrogate Town and Solihull Moors.

“Last weekend we were a bit light on options,” Heeley added. “We know Connor is not a natural defender, so he is going to make mistakes and positionally he might get caught out at times.

“But we can’t fault the lad at all. He has done a great job for us. But it will be nice to have a natural full-back there.”
