CALLS are being made by some Worcester City supporters fed up of being “strung along” by council bosses to look at alternative sites to build a stadium on the outskirts of Worcester.

City’s hopes of creating a 4,100-capacity ground at Perdiswell Park appear to be in tatters after Worcester City Council’s new Labour leadership agreed a Green Party demand to explore different locations for a ground.

A new cross-party working group will be set up with one Conservative, one Labour and one Green councillor alongside a club representative and council managing director Sheena Ramsey to find “the best site for Worcester” away from Perdiswell.

Applicants Worcester City Supporters’ Trust have already rejected alternative sites at the Cinderella Ground, St John’s, and at Claines Lane.

With the chances of building on Perdiswell fading, a number of fans suggested moving the search beyond the city council’s boundary.

Alwaysnextyear said: “Investigate alternative sites in Worcester? We’ve heard all this before so many times. It’s been done and there aren’t any suitable, so why do it all again? Any green space gets a house built on it.

“Any chance of scrounging one of Worcester Rugby Club’s Wychavon District Council fields?

“With a council like Worcester’s, you can certainly see why they moved outside the city boundaries.”

Miserablesod said: “Has the avenue of completely cutting out the city council been investigated and approaching Wychavon instead? I’m sure it has but it’s good to voice ideas. At this rate, we’re destined to never have a ground in the city.”

Manufan said they thought the Green Party were looking at a site in Martin Hussingtree, near Droitwich Spa.

Lancashirelad admitted they were “not shocked or disappointed” by the news and insisted City’s fight to build their own ground was “far from over”.

“If there are no other suitable sites for a stadium in Worcester, then start looking outside the city boundary,” Lancashirelad said.

“Many other league and non-league clubs don’t play in the actual city or town they are named after, so why can’t Worcester? Droitwich may offer an alternative venue for a stadium?”

Worcswolf said: “New stadiums should be on the outskirts of cities, like the rugby club.”

If a suitable new site can be found, taxpayers’ cash will be used to fund the bill for a new planning application.

The trust’s application was submitted in April 2014 and many supporters fear the delays could see the club go “bust”.

Brian Cleary said: “You really could not make this up — how long have City been strung along?

“Where are these other sites and why take so long to identify them? Is Worcester that big?”

Scott Kendrick added: “Hang your heads in shame councillors when our club probably goes bust.

“This club’s been strung along by you lot for far too long now — disgrace.”
