ONE of Worcester City’s most prominent season-ticket holders has given under-fire chairman Anthony Hampson his full support.

Staunch City fan Lord Faulkner of Worcester believes Hampson has been receiving “unfair” criticism in recent weeks and backed him to put the exiled club on a “secure footing”.

Jem Pitt, Rob Crean and Mike Davis resigned as directors after claiming they had been “deliberately excluded” from meetings and accused the rest of the board of “misleading” shareholders.

But Richard Faulkner fiercely defended the club’s bosses, saying they are determined to ensure the “success and survival” of the National League North outfit.

The Labour peer also described the trio’s decision to stand down as “strange”.

“I think Anthony and his colleagues are doing the very best they can and we should be behind them,” Faulkner said.

“That’s why I am disappointed the people on the supporters’ trust resigned. Until their resignation, I think the three of them were an asset to the board.

“They were certainly able to represent the trust’s point of view and I would have liked them to have stayed until the EGM when the issue of the ownership of the club was resolved. But to walk off the field (ahead of the meeting) did strike me as a bit strange.”

There was not enough backing for Worcester City Supporters’ Trust’s plans to make the club a community benefit society at last week’s EGM.

And Faulkner said he had not been in favour of the move, saying the proposed ownership model had gone “catastrophically wrong” at FC United of Manchester.

Instead, he believes the club should aim to secure further investment.

“One of the things that needs to happen is a change in the rules, which will allow one or more significant investors to come in,” Faulkner said.

“I think there is a reasonable chance that will attract the sort of money other clubs have enjoyed and it will therefore be possible to put the club onto a secure footing.”

Faulkner described Hampson as a “determined” character who had been running the club “incredibly prudently”.

“I am sorry the trust members have decided to leave the board but I wish to express my full support for Anthony and his colleagues,” he added.

“I know them all very well as men of principle and honour who would never knowingly mislead anyone.

“I am convinced they have the interests of the club at heart and are determined to ensure the survival and success of Worcester City FC, working with the city council to bring it back to Worcester at the first opportunity.”
