FORMER West Bromwich Albion defender James Chambers is “considering” coming out of retirement to play for Worcester City.

The 35-year-old, who decided to hang up his boots 12 months ago, featured in City’s 1-1 draw at Stratford Town on Tuesday night.

During his 16-year career, Chambers spent time at West Brom, Watford, Leicester City, Doncaster Rovers and Walsall.

He had loan spells with Cardiff City and Hereford United and memorably helped the Baggies and Watford secure promotion to the Premier League in 2002 and 2006 respectively.

After calling time on his football career, Chambers focused his efforts on building up his business My Farewell.

However, he is now looking for a way back into the game and Heeley says he is happy to provide a platform to prove himself.

“He has been out of the game for a year but he is missing football, so he asked us if he could have a runaround,” Heeley said.

“He will take it game by game and we will see what happens with him.”

Heeley described his performance at Knights Lane as “tremendous” but admitted it was up to Chambers to decide whether or not he wanted to stay at City.

“He retired from full-time football as he wanted to set up a business,” he said.

“There is a consideration he might play again but it is going to be working around his business commitments. We will see what he wants to do and how he feels. But he is still in decent nick and I was quite impressed with him.”

Heeley said he was also pleased with the performance of Jordan Wilson, who came off the bench to score a 25-yard screamer against Stratford.

“He is a youngster who has come out of Shrewsbury Town, so we will have a look at him and see what he is all about,” said Heeley, who has made just four signings this summer.

“It is early in pre-season and it is a two-way thing as you want to have a look at players and they want to have a look (at the club).”

Wilson and Chambers are both set to feature on Saturday against Aston Villa’s first-team squad at Stourport Swifts’ Walshes Meadow (3pm).

Heeley says his players are relishing the prospect of testing themselves against the Championship outfit, who were relegated from the Premier League last season.

“You don’t get opportunities like this very often,” he said.

“We are grateful to Villa and it will be something different for them.

“I am sure there will be a decent crowd as it is a high-profile game and we are looking forward to it.”

Villa are also due to play a friendly against Telford United on Saturday at noon with the squad likely to be split for the two games although a spokesman said who would play where was not yet known.
