MANAGER Carl Heeley has launched a scathing attack on his players, insisting some of them are “not good enough” to play for Worcester City.

The City boss was left fuming after his side crashed out of the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup following an “awful” 2-0 defeat to Redditch United.

Second half goals from Danico Johnson and Javea Roberts secured the Evo Stik Southern Premier League side a place in the final on Saturday when they will take on either Kidderminster Harriers or Evesham United.

And Heeley admitted the result was a “reality check” to a number of his players who were keen to earn a deal at the Vanarama National League North outfit.

“That (performance) was awful,” said Heeley, who handed several trialists, including former Tamworth keeper Raajan Gill, ex-Birmingham City academy ace Edji Mbunga, midfielder Brad Williams, defender Andy Gallinagh and attacker Mickael Partodikromo, the chance to impress.

“That was a competition that we won last season, but from the first minute onwards we were lethargic, sloppy and we were just giving the ball away.

“There was no desire, no leadership and no real application to do a job.

“We didn’t need to get into top gear, but we didn’t get anywhere near them and we got what we deserved.

“A number of players will be trying to impress, but it doesn’t look like it from watching them and I think it is a bit of a reality check if some of them think they are going to be playing in the Conference North.

“It’s not going to happen.”

Heeley, who made his feelings felt to his players after the game, added: “The message (in the changing room) was some of you aren’t good enough.

“You have come to impress and get a deal here, but some of you are nowhere near this level.”

Lee Hughes twice went close just before the break, while former Sheffield United youngster Partodikromo offered an injection of pace when he came off the bench.

However, Heeley insisted he was “struggling to pick out any real positives” from City’s dire display at Walshes Meadow.

Worcester are not scheduled to play again until Saturday, July 30 when they made the trip to Leamington in their final pre-season clash, but Heeley admitted he was looking to arrange another fixture.

“We could only name 18 (players against Redditch), so I feel sorry for the boys who couldn’t get on because I am clinging on to the hope that if we could have made more changes some of them would have shown a little bit of what you need to win a game of football,” he said.

“But we were miles and miles away on Tuesday night.”

He added: “We will sort something out in the next day or so, but who we play on the weekend is the least of my worries at the moment.

“It is which players play when we play our next game because our last performance was not even remotely close to being acceptable.”
