GRAHAM Hutchison says he is happy to be back at the “right club” after admitting he made a “mistake” leaving Worcester City.

The talented centre back spent two years at Worcester before making the step up to the National League with FC Halifax Town in February 2015.

But Hutchison’s hopes of becoming a mainstay in the Shaymen’s defence never materialised, leading to three separate loan spells at AFC Telford United.

The 23-year-old insisted he enjoyed his experience at Halifax, who were relegated to the Vanarama National League North last season, but he admitted he found it hard to settle at the Yorkshire club.

“It was probably not the right decision,” said the former Scotland Under-17 international.

“They were training during the day and one evening a week and it was a lot further from home.

“I had taken on a new job as well and it was a step up, so I had to get to grips with that.

“But you live and you learn.

“I am still only 23 and I think I forget that sometimes.

“I feel like I have been around the leagues for a long time now, but I am still a young lad, so you are going to make mistakes and you have got to learn from them and move on.”

Despite struggling to make the cut at Halifax, the ex-Birmingham City youngster says he benefitted from being involved in a relegation scrap at Telford.

“I didn’t go there because I felt like we were going to win the league,” he said.

“I went there because I got a really good feeling from Rob (Smith) and Larry (Chambers).

“I actually remember my first training sessions as we ran all night and it was the hardest running session I have ever done.

“I thought ‘Bloody hell what have I signed up for here’. But they are just a pair of characters and you do warm to them.

“So I reflect fondly on my time there.”

Hutchison was offered a deal to stay at Telford, but he says he could not turn down the chance to return to City.

“I have always spoke very highly about Worcester,” said Hutchison, who was part of City’s memorable run in the FA Cup in 2014.

“I have fond memories of the run we went on and the friends that I made.

“Everyone from top to bottom at this club is really welcoming and it just feels like the right club to be at.”

Hutchison also appears to be in contention to be appointed captain ahead of the new campaign having skippered City in all five of their pre-season games.

“I am just raring to go for the start of the new season,” he added.

“It seems like we are putting together a good side, so hopefully we can smash the first game (against Harrogate Town on Saturday, August 6).”
