Who will skipper Worcester City?

It’s a question manager Carl Heeley says he has yet to “fully discuss” ahead of the new campaign, but admits there are a number of “characters” with “captain material”.

With less than two weeks to go before Worcester host Harrogate Town on the opening day of the season, we have looked at possible contenders for the captaincy and given you the chance to vote.

Danny Jackman…

Worcester born and bred, the 33-year-old wears the shirt with pride and has played more than 300 games for various clubs in the Football League.

His appointment as captain midway through last season proved to be a masterstroke by manager Carl Heeley as he helped bring the team together during a turbulent time.

He will no doubt be keen to stay on as skipper, but a succession of appearances on the bench has raised question marks over his position in the side ahead of the new season.

Graham Hutchison…

The centre-back has only been back at the club a couple of months, but he has already re-established himself in the team and put a strong case forward to be City’s captain.

After admitting he made a “mistake” leaving Worcester for FC Halifax Town in February 2015, Hutchison appears determined to make up for lost time.

The 23-year-old has worn the captain’s armband in a number of City’s pre-season games and he does not look like relinquishing it anytime soon.

Tom Sharpe…

The defender may be considered as the quiet man of the team, but he is also known as ‘Mr Reliable’ as he rarely puts a foot wrong.

Sharpe received managers’ player of the season following a solid 2015/2016 campaign and Heeley often says he does not get the appreciation he deserves.

The 27-year-old would lead by example and has experienced skippering Brackley Town before joining City last summer.

Lee Hughes…

When Heeley talks about “characters” in the dressing room, Hughes certainly comes to mind.

Having played for the likes of West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City, the 40-year-old has bags of experience at the top level.

He has become an inspirational figure since joining the club last year as his goals were key in keeping City up last season.

However, having served time in prison and with a reputation as a hot-headed player, he would be a controversial choice to lead the Blue and Whites.

Junior English…

Having spent more than a decade playing in the Vanarama National League North, the midfielder’s know-how of the division will be a valuable asset to Heeley’s men this season.

After ending his 12-year stint at Solihull Moors, English has vowed to nail down his place in the City team.

The 30-year-old has already shown his commitment in pre-season having played in a number of positions and is someone who could carry the responsibility of captain.
