BOSS Carl Heeley believes Worcester City’s patience paid off after completing the signing of experienced defender James Chambers.

The former West Bromwich Albion, Watford and Leicester City player made his debut in City’s 2-2 draw against Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday.

And Heeley believes Chambers, who announced his retirement in July last year, will be a “quality” addition to his squad despite a “rusty” first-half showing.

During the summer, the 35-year-old, who has also had spells with Cardiff City, Doncaster Rovers, Hereford United and Walsall, appeared to be looking for a route back into football when he turned out twice for Worcester in pre-season.

Heeley was unable to recruit Chambers before the campaign got under way last month but revealed he continued to train with City.

“Like I said a number of weeks ago, it was about being patient with James and taking our time,” he said.

“We were talking to him and he has kept training with us.

“But we have come to an arrangement that works for the club and for James and we will review it as it goes along.

“But we are delighted to have him on board as he is a great lad and will bring a lot of experience and quality to us.”

Heeley said City were also keen to sign attacker and admitted they were in negotiations with a club over a possible new addition.

“We will take any players who are better than what we have already got and that could improve us,” said Heeley, whose side have yet to pick up a win this season and host Alfreton Town tomorrow (7.45pm).

“But I think a little bit of quality in the wide areas or someone who could play either side would be a good addition to the squad.

“We are looking and there is a player we are interested in.

“But his club have got their head in the clouds over what they think he is worth, so that is unlikely to happen at the moment.”
