COLBY Bishop is confident he can fill the boots of suspended star striker Lee Hughes and put Worcester City back on the goal trail.

The fit-again forward scored his first goal since his comeback from injury in City’s 1-1 draw at Curzon Ashton in Vanarama National League North on Monday.

And the 20-year-old is expected to lead the line again tomorrow (3pm) when the Blue and Whites visit Alfreton Town at the Impact Arena.

City will be without top scorer Hughes for the third successive game as he continues to serve his four-match ban.

However, Bishop believes he has got the ability to “step up” in the absence of the 40-year-old former West Brom ace who has scored 13 goals in 27 appearances this term.

“It is annoying when Hughesy is out as he brings a lot to the team and we like to play up front together,” he said.

“But I have got to do the job on my own.

“I have got to step up to the task when he is not there but I am quite confident I have got enough ability to do that.”

Bishop had been looking in decent form in front of goal before twisting his knee in Worcester’s FA Trophy defeat at York City last month.

But after notching his eighth goal of the campaign at Curzon the former Notts County youngster is determined to “kick on” and help struggling City.

Worcester’s last victory came when Bishop fired in a last-gasp winner to edge AFC Telford United 2-1 on Saturday, November 12.

Since then, Carl Heeley’s men have lost four, drawn four and scored four goals from the last eight league games, leaving them just four points above the drop zone.

“It has been annoying sitting out when you see the team are not scoring and you believe you can add goals to the team,” he said. “But now I am back and scored on Monday so hopefully I can get on a roll.

“I am on eight goals so far and obviously that’s not where I would want to be but the injury has not helped me. It is not the worst figure but hopefully I can build on it within the next few months.”

Bishop also has fond memories of City’s next opponents as he struck twice in their 5-3 triumph over Alfreton at home in September.

And he hopes they can turn on the style for a second time against the Derbyshire side who sit one place and one point behind Worcester in 18th but have conceded 26 more goals.

“I came off the bench and got two goals the last time we played them and that was probably the most exciting game this season,” Bishop said.

“I know they score and concede a lot of goals but we have not been doing either recently.

“But I think it will be a very open game and I reckon there will be a lot of chances.”
