MANAGERLESS Worcester City have been benefitting from the “experience” and “knowledge” of veteran defender James Chambers.

The former Leicester City, Watford and West Bromwich Albion player came out of retirement to sign for Worcester in September.

And captain Danny Jackman said he and caretaker boss John Snape would be “fools” not to take the “outstanding” 36-year-old’s advice.

Jackman has been assisting Snape since Carl Heeley ended his seven-year reign at the Vanarama National League North outfit in late January.

But he insisted they had made best use of the experience within the squad, including Chambers, who was ruled out of City’s 1-1 draw at Nuneaton Town last Saturday with a knee injury.

“Chambo has been outstanding for us,” Jackman said.

“He was brilliant for us (against Darlington) last weekend and he has been helping us behind the scenes, so his experience is going to be key.

“We want to get him out on the pitch.

“But we are all trying to chip in as experienced lads and give our advice to the young lads as well as Snapper.”

Chambers has also had spells at Cardiff City, Doncaster, Hereford United and Walsall before announcing his retirement in July 2015.

He has made nine appearances for City, but his season has been disrupted by injuries.

“He is helping us with his opinions,” Jackman continued.

“He has got vast experience as a defender, so if he can give us a little bit of experience and knowledge to help work on the back four then great.

“You would be a fool not to take it, so we are all working together and trying hard. We need as many people pulling in the same direction as we can.”

City are hoping to have Chambers back fit for their clash against Boston United at Bromsgrove’s Victoria Ground on Saturday (3pm).

Centre-back Graham Hutchison, who was an unused substitute at Nuneaton, is also expected to be pushing for a starting spot after returning from a knee problem.

“Hutch has been out for a few weeks and Sam Oji was ill last week, so he was probably in a better state in terms of training and having more game-time recently,” Jackman said.

“We are starting to get quality all over the shop and it is good to have players like Hutch back as he is experienced.”

But winger Chekaine Steele is likely to need more time to recover from a hamstring injury sustained in the closing stages of City’s 2-2 draw with Darlington.

Jackman said he was also unsure of the situation with experienced striker Steven Craig, who did not make the trip to Nuneaton.

“I am not sure whether Snapper had spoken to Stevie regarding a few things,” Jackman added.

“Whether he was not feeling 100 per cent or carrying an injury, I am not sure.

“Chekaine came off last weekend. I think he has injured his hamstring so it will depend on how quickly he can recover, but he will be out next weekend.

“But we have got young Chay Scrivens and Cieron Keane, so we have got options out wide.”
