CARETAKER boss John Snape insists nobody wants relegation on their CV as a “hungry” Worcester City side resume their fight for survival against Salford City tomorrow (3pm).

Worcester are level on points with third-from-bottom Gainsborough Trinity with only goal difference keeping Snape’s men out of the drop zone.

But a victory at the Victoria Ground and a loss for Gainsborough against Kidderminster Harriers would all but retain City’s Vanarama National League North status.

Anything less though and the Blue and Whites’ battle to avoid the drop will go down to the final day of the season the following Saturday when they visit leaders AFC Fylde and Trinity travel to FC United of Manchester.

Worcester have only been relegated three times in their 115-year history with the last taking place in 1985.

But Snape has backed his players to stay up, praising them for focusing on matters on the pitch rather than on the cash-strapped club’s problems off it in recent weeks.

“Of course I think we can do it,” Snape said.

“They have had a bit of adversity through the season with the knowledge of the things that are happening at the club.

“But I think they have taken that out of their minds in the last four weeks and put in some excellent performances.

“There is a definite hunger to stay up as no one wants relegation on their CV.”

Along with Gainsborough, Stalybridge Celtic will be hoping City slip up as they aim to keep their hopes of climbing to safety alive.

Celtic are six points adrift but have a game in hand on Worcester as they host Tamworth tomorrow and Harrogate Town on Tuesday before visiting Brackley Town.

City are expected to be without winger Chekaine Steele who suffered a hamstring injury in the 0-0 draw with Stockport County on Monday.

Forward Jordan Murphy was forced off with an Achilles problem but Snape expects him to recover in time to face Salford.

Snape is likely to stick with the same back four who shut out Stockport but he could be tempted to recall captain and experienced midfielder Danny Jackman to the starting line-up.

Attacking midfielder Ebby Nelson-Addy looks set to replace Steele on the right wing.

Sixth-placed Salford, meanwhile, will be gunning for three points to boost their bid to finish in the top five.

The Greater Manchester outfit, who are two points off the play-off places, are backed by former Manchester United players Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and Gary and Phil Neville.

Worcester lost 3-0 at Salford in November but Snape believes the City faithful can play an important role in the clash.

A crowd of 922 with 508 fans from Stockport turned out on Monday.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Snape added.

“There was an optimistic view to the game and they all got behind us.

“I spoke to a couple of the fans before the game. They shared their concerns to me about the football club but they saw the effort from the lads.

“All we have got to do is win the next two games and we will be safe — that’s the message to the players and the fans — so come out and help us.”

City will hold their end-of-season awards in the Rouslers Bar after the game at 6pm.
