WORCESTER City appear to be close to landing a friendly against Lee Hughes’ former club Notts County this summer.

Hughes revealed he had held talks with Magpie’s new owner Alan Hardy over a possible pre-season clash with Worcester at Bromsgrove’s Victoria Ground.

The 40-year-old has recently been appointed as joint-boss of City, who have dropped three levels to play in Midland League Premier Division next season.

And he says he is using his contacts in the game to help generate money for the cash-strapped club.

Hughes was a big hit at County having netted 65 goals in 144 games in three-and-a-half seasons between 2009 and 2013.

Notts play in League Two and are managed by former Bolton Wanderers, Newcastle United and West Ham United midfielder Kevin Nolan. They also boast ex-Premier League players Alan Smith and Shola Ameobi.

“I was on a question and answer at Notts County with supporters,” Hughes said.

“The new owner was there and I asked him for a friendly game. He said yes, so he is going to bring a team down to play us in pre-season.”

Hughes admits to taking a pay cut to return to the Blue and Whites as part of a management team with John Snape.

And the former West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City striker insists he is keen to boost Worcester financially while in exile.

“If the clubs want me to do questions and answers and forums I will do that,” Hughes added.

“I will try to generate a bit of money as I just want to help the club get into a better situation.”
