THERE will be “nothing complicated” with the way Worcester City set up next season, according to joint manager Lee Hughes.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City striker is making his first steps into management at Worcester.

And he believes a 4-4-2 formation will be the most effective in the Midland League Premier Division.

“I want to play a 4-4-2 this season,” said Hughes who will share his managerial duties with John Snape.

“It is a simple formation and nothing complicated.

“The pitches are not good enough to play around with it in the middle. We have got to get the ball into their half first and then we can play in the final third.”

Snape said: “I think a lot of teams will play 4-5-1 again us and be hard to break down, but if we can go a couple of goals up we are going to play from the back and make the pitch as big as we can.

“Our full backs are going to push on and hopefully Nathan Hayward will win the ball in the middle of the park and start to play.”

With less than four weeks before the campaign gets underway, Hughes says he is determined to make sure “everyone knows their jobs”.

City begin their pre-season fixtures tomorrow night (7.45pm) when they visit Leamington before travelling to Gornal Athletic on Thursday (7.45pm).

“We are going to do shadow play in training and drill things into them,” Hughes said.

“Since I have been here I don’t think we have worked on it enough.

“I think shadow play is massive as we can look at how we are going to play and how we are going to defend, so everyone knows their jobs and there are no excuses at the end of the game.”
