MATT Gwynne “could be a number one at any club” in the Midland League according to his manager John Snape.

The Worcester City stopper endured a torrid moment in his first match since the return of Nathan Vaughan, fumbling a high looping ball that dropped into the net during Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Westfields.

But Snape was quick to highlight his unflinching support of Gwynne.

“The second goal was a mistake and they happen,” said Snape.

“I am not going to hammer Matt. He is definitely a part of our plans and has been doing well all season.

“It was an error but everyone out there made mistakes, including the referee and me. Unfortunately they tend to get punished when you are a goalkeeper.

“For Matt it was the chance to play against his old side and you always relish the chance to get one over on them. He played his part and was not relieved with the win in the dressing room afterwards, he was joyous.”

On Vaughan’s omission, Snape added: “Nathan said when he joined that he would struggle to make a couple of the away games, we were aware of that.

“It showed we have the strength in depth to bring in someone like Matt, a keeper who could be a number one at any club in this league.”
