ANGRY joint-boss Lee Hughes accused Worcester City of complacency having seen a two-goal lead go up in smoke in last night's 2-2 draw at AFC Wulfrunians.

Hughes insisted questions would be asked of players and management in the wake of dropping points from a match they had been winning at a canter.

City penned back their hosts from the off with Wulfs defender Tom Ray flicking Brad Birch's header across goal into his own net with less than three minutes played.

Birch fired the second high into the roof of the net from an Alex Tomkinson cross 20 minutes in and Mark Smith hit the angle of post and bar from a corner before the interval.

But Worcester failed to find the same intensity in the second half with Scott Stevenson's corner swirling straight in despite keeper Nathan Vaughan’s claims he had been unfairly blocked while trying to collect the ball just past the hour.

City still looked comfortable until a blocked shot dropped for substitute Jumaane Meggoe to provide the sting in the tail, squeezing into Vaughan's bottom right corner from 20 yards in injury time.

“The way I saw it, the lads thought it was to easy and that they could stroll it,” admitted Hughes.

“The first-half performance was tremendous, we moved the ball quickly, made runs off each other’s lines and picked up spaces in the holes to create a lot of chances.

“We knew they had probably got a bit of a rollicking at half-time and would roll up their sleeves in the second half.

“It has happened a couple of times this season where we thought it would be too easy to go on to win.

“The higher you go, teams and players will keep doing the things that got them into a winning position. It should be like a conveyor belt.

“We stopped doing the things we had been. There was no movement in the second half, we were flat and got kicked up the backside.

“You should learn from your mistakes and it didn’t seem like we had. That’s the most disappointing thing and we have to learn quickly or we won’t be up there.

“We have to look at why we haven’t taken the game to them in the second half. Is it me and Snapper (joint-manager John Snape)? Is it the players collectively? Is it individuals taking their eye off the ball?

“Over the next few days we have to give it plenty of thought and see how we will approach the next few games. We are going to look into everything because it has happened too many times.”

Alongside Vaughan’s protestations over the home side’s first, there was a suspicion of offside in the build-up to the equaliser but Hughes did not wish to lean on excuses.

“We had no complaints,” he added. “None of the lads had anything to say about that in the dressing room afterwards.”
