MANAGER John Snape lauded the loyalty of midfielder Mat Birley following "a cheeky approach" from Midland League promotion hopefuls Highgate United on Friday.

The 31-year-old former Birmingham City youngster returned in the summer and took another step towards 150 City appearances in Saturday's man-of-the-match display at Loughborough University.

That milestone may not have been achieved had Highgate succeeded in taking advantage of uncertainty over Worcester's on-field plans for next season with Snape grateful for Birley's handling of the situation.

"Birls turned down a cheeky approach from Highgate on Friday, he phoned me straight away and said he did not want go," said Snape.

"In the current climate, Mat's response is refreshing and good news for the club. He then went out and played in the same way he always does on Saturday, on the front foot and wanting to make things happen.

"It was a tough night on Tuesday against Shawbury as well. We asked him to drop in at right-back and again he proved to be Mr Reliable.

"He created a number of chances and if anything was probably guilty of missing a few. The only disappointment this season has been his goal ratio.

"Racking up 150 appearances would be an outstanding achievement. He played some big games at the top end when the club was in the National North and his professionalism has not changed now at this level.

"He has been plagued by some terrible injuries along the way which have hampered what would have been a fantastic career.

"He has been a great asset to this club, on and off the pitch, and his support and influence has been massive since we dropped down to this level. He is a pleasure to work with."

The rumour mill continues to churn over possible exits with captain Brad Birch now linked with a return to Stourbridge.

Snape insisted the club had not received any approach for Birch with any suitors now unable to file the standard seven-day notice period with the registration deadline passing at 5pm on Thursday.

City would have to waive the right to that notice period for any last-ditch moves to go through.

"There is the possibility of players going out," said Snape. "We have the three approaches in for Tyler Weir from last week. I spoke to him on Saturday morning and he has some decisions to make.

"There are others who could have their heads turned before Thursday's deadline. Even in these uncertain times, we only want people who want to see out the season with us.

"Mat is a great example. He showed a no-nonsense approach to the move from Highgate and we hope the other lads follow that lead."
