MANAGER John Snape reckons quiet man and new player-coach Mat Birley will have no problem making himself heard in Worcester City’s dressing room.

Midfielder Birley, 31, was handed his new role yesterday and becomes the second player to be retained by City following Jamie Smith’s commitment for the 2018-19 campaign.

The former Birmingham City youngster aims to complete his UEFA B licence while adding to the 154 appearances he has racked up in the blue and white of Worcester.

And while Birley is not known for having much to say, Snape believes his actions on and off the pitch will continue to speak louder than words.

“Mat says things when they need to be said and just as importantly, does so in the right manner,” said Snape.

“Nine times out of 10 he gets the right outcome. He is not the most vocal but when he talks, people listen. It is fantastic for us that he has signed again.

“We have discussed his player-coach role with him being such a stalwart and respected figure at the club. It has been agreed but we need to develop the detail on that front to make sure it fits for Mat.

“Having played with him at Bromsgrove Rovers just after he had left Birmingham City, I could see back then how well he conducted himself.

“He is a no-nonsense character with an honest and open approach. That cannot be questioned and that’s why I want him at the club, he has massive respect from all of the players, me and the backroom staff.

“Mat’s knowledge of the game is thorough, he knows his stuff inside out. The know-how he can pass on to the younger players we are looking to introduce will be immense.”

Last season Birley racked up 38 matches, more than in any of his previous City campaigns, and earned the plaudits of his peers by being named players’ player of the season.

“The negotiations were pretty quick in terms of Mat staying as a player, something I felt would be paramount for us going into next season,” said Snape.

“It was plain to see, particularly at the start and end of last season, what a genius he is in controlling matches.

“He struggled on some of the more difficult pitches but has learned from that and is up for the challenge next season.”

Meanwhile, Snape has been busy thrashing out terms with the bulk of last season’s squad.

“We have spoken to a number of players on the phone or in person,” he added. “Everyone we think can help us to move forward will be offered terms but it will be at a rate that is within the budget.”
