WORCESTER City might not be involved in tomorrow’s Blue Square Bet North play-off final but the club has more than just a passing interest.

Three former City players are bidding to win promotion to non-league’s top-flight when Gainsborough Trinity and Nuneaton Town lock horns at the former’s Northolme ground (3pm).

Striker Danny Glover and defenders Neil Cartwright and Graham Ward all ply their trade at Nuneaton having left St George’s Lane for Liberty Way in recent times.

Glover top-scored for Worcester with 20 goals in the 2010-11 campaign but opted to leave for Warwickshire last summer, while full-back Cartwright was released by City in January during their defensive shake-up.

Both were integral to Nuneaton beating City 3-0 on Easter Monday, a result that played a part in Carl Heeley’s team ultimately failing to make the play-offs.

Right-back Ward, meanwhile, made the switch to Nuneaton last summer after rejecting a new deal at the Lane but the former Kidderminster Harriers and Cheltenham Town player has been troubled with a knee problem this term.

The Irishman has played just twice since suffering the injury in November and is due to undergo surgery on Monday.

Ironically, City ended up having their best season in recent times and only missed out on reaching the top five in the penultimate match when they drew 2-2 at Gainsborough.

However, play-off involvement was Ward’s aim on leaving and, despite not playing as much as he would have liked, he does not regret the decision and will urge his team-mates on from the sidelines.

“I liked my time at Worcester but I wanted to make it into the play-offs,” he said.

“I think it’s worked out for me.

“I am looking forward to the final which should be a great game.”

Glover added: “It’s been a long season and it all comes down to this match.”
