ONE part of a tough weekend successfully negotiated. Now for challenge number two.

That’s the view of Worcester City manager Carl Heeley as he prepares his team for tonight’s high-profile clash with Brackley Town at St George’s Lane (7.45).

The Blue Square North encounter comes around just 48 hours after City emerged impressive 2-1 victors at Boston United where new front man Alex Meechan was a debutant match-winner.

The 32-year-old forward, snapped up from Harrogate Town, was plunged straight into the starting line-up and repaid his boss with the decisive 86th minute strike.

Heeley said: “Alex is a great lad and we’re really pleased to have him on board. I had been talking to Simon Weaver up at Harrogate for some time to see if Alex was available.

“When I was told he was interested in coming, we had a chat and it’s great to get him here. He did really well at Boston, took his goal brilliantly and gave us a real cutting edge.”

The much-travelled Meechan began his career on the Football League books of Swindon Town and then Bristol City and has plied his trade mainly in the upper reaches of non-league football with a dozen clubs since 2000 — including three spells at Forest Green.

Now he will be firmly in contention to retain his spot for Brackley’s visit tonight.

It’s a match that could see four players return to the fray — centre-half Lee Ayres, defensive midfielder Rob Elvins and midfielder Charlie Reece, all following suspension, plus striker Danny Glover after injury.

Heeley added: “It’s good to have more options at our disposal, not least because it is probably the toughest weekend of our season so far.

“To go to a place like Boston and then follow up with a match against one of the top sides is always going to be a challenge.

“But we came through well on Saturday when we worked really hard and I thought we merited our win as we continually looked a threat.

“We know what Brackley will have to offer, but our boys will be ready. Everyone is looking forward to the match and hopefully our fans will get behind us.”

Brackley come to the Lane on something of a slight dip in fortunes, having slipped to third place on the back of netting just two points from their last three matches.
