WORCESTER City’s inability to win at home continues to blight their play-off push as Solihull Moors became the sixth side to triumph at St George’s Lane this season.

Just 48 hours after a third successive away victory at Stalybridge Celtic, Carl Heeley’s team again came up short in front of their own supporters.

Gary Birch put the visitors ahead after seven minutes and Junior English made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute.

Michael Taylor pounced for his first goal in three games two minutes before half-time.

However, former Worcester player Jay Denny restored the two-goal advantage for the visitors early in the second period.

It was the fifth game in a row at the Lane without victory for City and also the third home game running in which they conceded two or more goals — stark contrast to three straight clean sheets on the road.

City, missing centre-half Stuart Whitehead but with Tyler Weir back in the ranks, made the worse possible start to their chance of climbing into the Blue Square Bet North top five.

With seven minutes gone, Dior Angus’ free-kick was floated into the area and glanced past Glyn Thompson by the head of Birch.

City cranked up the pressure with a flurry of corners but it was Thompson who was the busier of the two keepers, saving from English and then tipping Birch’s drive past the post.

Worcester were dangerous on the break and a pin-point cross from Glover was headed inches wide by Taylor.

For Solihull, Blackwood blazed over with the goal gaping seconds before English doubled their advantage.

Angus got the better of Ellis Deeney on the right, fired a cross into the box and the striker diverted the ball past Thompson via the post.

Worcester, who also preferred Matt Breeze to Matt Birley, refused to let their heads drop and deservedly halved the deficit two minutes before the break.

A firm Lee Ayres header from Thorley’s corner was saved on the line by Singh but Taylor was on hand to blast home.

Solihull needed only three minutes of the second-half to restore their two-goal cushion and it came courtesy of a mix-up in the home defence. Thompson failed to gather the ball in the area and, despite the frantic efforts of his team-mates, it fell to Denny to prod over the line.

The visitors fancied a fourth and it needed a superb reflex save from Thompson to deny Angus.

In desperate need of inspiration, manager Heeley threw on Mike Symons and Greg Mills either side of Taylor having a shot blocked by Singh.

But the closest they came was in stoppage-time when Singh saved from Thorley and Reece.
