City show their intent with Whitehead deal

ANYONE doubting the ambition of Worcester City need look no further than the transfer dealings of the past couple of weeks.

The January window may not exist in Blue Square Bet North but it hasn’t stopped manager Carl Heeley using the month to dip into the market and make a statement of intent.

The St George’s Lane boss could quite easily have left the squad alone safe in the knowlege they were more than capable of holding their own in the top half of the league.

But City have made no secret of wanting to push for the play-offs and, to paraphrase Heeley’s comments of recent weeks, the current crop weren’t cutting it — defensively at least.

So, in signing veteran centre-half Stuart Whitehead alongside the youthful prospects of left-back Ellis Deeney and versatile full-back Tyler Weir, City have made their move.

It is a calculated gamble, not least because it has come at the expense of the experienced Martyn Naylor and, surprisingly, utility player Neil Cartwright.

Both would probably have stayed in an ideal world but Worcester don’t have the resources to carry a large squad so they have been moved on.

City’s finances require a fine balancing act, underlined further by Lee Smith being loaned to Cirencester Town to accommodate striker Phil Green.

In all of this, however, it is the acquisition of Whitehead that stands out.

Attracting a player who has graced the upper echelons of the non-league pyramid with Telford United and Kidderminster Harriers appears a fine piece of business.

Securing him on an 18-month contract lays some foundation for next season as well.

At 35, Whitehead is in the twilight of his career but he only left the Blue Square Bet Premier side because of their transition to full-time status, a regime he could not commit to because of his job.

By signing for Worcester, he can strike a happy balance and would like nothing better than to lead them to promotion via the play-offs, something he achieved with Telford last season.

Whitehead, who made his debut in last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Colwyn Bay, said: “I know Carl and have played against him.

“I also know some of the people at Worcester who have said good things about the club so it seemed a perfect opportunity.

“Worcester are a big club in non-league and the location is brilliant for me because I only live in Redditch.

“At my age, rest and recuperation is just as important as training and playing and I was training a lot at Telford. Hopefully, having the extra rest days and less travelling will be beneficial for me.

“I know City are moving forward with the ground (at Nunnery Way) and I know the plans Carl has for the future. I can only see them going on to bigger and better things.

“It’s an exciting time to be part of Worcester City and hopefully their ambitions match mine. There’s no better feeling than getting promotion.

“We are not too far off the play-offs and it’s achieveable with the talent in the squad, but there’s a bit of catching up to do.”

Of his debut, Whitehead added: “It doesn’t matter how much experience you have got, it’s always a little bit of a daunting prospect because you don’t know your team-mates that well.”

Interesting. With respect I would class myself in the following category "ANYONE doubting the ambition of Worcester City need look no further than the transfer dealings of the past couple of weeks."
I hardly feel that the signing of - "At 35, Whitehead is in the twilight of his career" shows a noteworthy amount of ambition and therefore I will remain unconvinced as to Worcester's ambition. Even if by some miracle Worcester City do manage to get out of this league it seems likely that they will fold within a couple of years.

Nigel,

Sign upto the Supporters Trust today, £1 per season, we could use all help to be the voice for the fans in the future.

Of course you could always turn up and watch the team every home match and see how good a player Stuart Whitehead is, at the age of 40 Frank Sinclair played against us the other day and can still play at that age, no reason why Stuart cant be a success and play until he is in his 40s.

It's hard to support a team like Worcester City. I've tried but there really isnt much to excite anyone about them. They are triers, but I firmly believe they will be stuck in this league forever. I admire people who feel able to commit time and money to a local team, but I dont really see the point when there is so much better to be had. And I prefer cricket.

City Blue Boy,
I do attend regular Worcester City matches, however I feel like Bernard here we have to be realistic. Worcester City are never going to achieve anything of note. This is entirely down to a huge lack of ambition. When Cecil Duckworth offered to bankroll the club, the Worcester City board were so scared of him revealing their corrupt ways that they refused!

I admire your optimism, the fact is the Nunnery Way plan is a disaster. Nobody will be willing to go and watch Worcester City up there. The one redeeming feature of the current club is that it is situated in the heart of the city. Time to accept that Worcester will never really have a football team to be proud of. Let's accept we are a Rugby city and always will be

Not joining up with Duckworth may have been a very big mistake of the old regime. However, that is very much in the past and nothing that we can do a thing about!
A new board has taken over and have had to turnaround a failing club that should have gone out of business 2 years ago. The turnaround will not be done overnight, we have no sugar daddy who is going to pump millions in then walk away when he is bored, we have a group of 700 + loyal supporters who turn up every week, watching this season, some very exciting end to end football.
They are building on that success and week by week, month by month are turning this club around.
It is critical fans who turn their back on the club that make it harder all the while, but their is a very determined group who are trying to make this club the success it was in the late 70s and early 80s.
The supporters trust are doing all they can to make the new ground a success and to give the voice of what happens in this club back to the supporters.
Give this board a chance, support your home club, get behind the team rather than criticise them or be ageist. Start by joining the supporters trust for a whole £1 and see what a difference your help can do to the club! You might even be surprised!
