WORCESTER City were far from their best but they continued their unbeaten start to the season with a stalemate at Histon.

The visitors, aiming for their first Blue Square Bet North away win of the campaign following two previous draws, failed to create many clear-cut chances at Bridge Road against a Histon side trounced 5-0 at Altrincham last Saturday.

Indeed, it was the hosts who looked the more likely to break the deadlock in a contest low on quality with Glyn Thompson by far the busier of the two keepers.

Worcester also missed the aerial presence of Rob Elvins who, despite playing in last Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Colwyn Bay, failed a late fitness test on a hip injury.

He was replaced by summer signing Jay Denny for his first start of the season but City struggled to dominate the midfield, a situation that remained when Matt Birley replaced Denny on the hour.

City forced three corners early on in the match but the closest they came was a deflected header wide from Danny Glover and striker partner Mike Symons glancing a header wide from Tom Thorley’s free-kick.

But Stutes keeper Joe Mellings had little to do in the first-half and it was the hosts who gradually threw off the shackles and had the better opportunities. Kaine Sheppard sounded the first warning by flashing a 15th-minute shot inches wide of Thompson’s goal.

The hosts continued to push forward and it needed Stuart Whitehead, a rock at the heart of the City defence, to hack Junior Konadu-Yiadom’s shot off the line in the 28th-minute. The striker dallied over his effort after cutting into the box but the skipper did well to save his side with keeper Thompson out of position.

Moments later, Jack Eades drilled a free-kick inches wide before taking a corner from which captain Danny Fitzsimons planted a header against the bar.

A strong start to the second period from Worcester saw Symons have an effort deflected into the side netting and Glover graze the bar with a header from inside the six-yard box following a Tyler Weir pass.

Whitehead again came to his side’s rescue in the 65th minute, stretching to prod the ball away from danger with Sheppard ready to pounce in the six-yard box.

Michael Taylor replaced Glover with 21 minutes to go, and then Charlie Reece made way for Danny Edwards, as City sought to put the pressure on. But, despite Edwards firing wide from the edge of the box, chances remained few and far between for the visitors.
