Danny glad to be back in picture

IT has been a long time since Danny Edwards started back-to-back matches for Worcester City — three months to be precise.

After a promising start to the campaign which saw him play the first four games, the left winger suffered a hamstring injury at Histon in August and was sidelined for the best part of two months.

However, he is currently one of City’s form players and his man-of-the-match display in Monday’s 4-0 Worcestershire FA Senior Cup drubbing of Redditch United, including scoring a second-half penalty, was proof of that.

He was recalled to the side on the back of impressive substitute cameos, including a fine finish in the 4-1 Blue Square Bet North defeat at Droylsden earlier this month.

Now he could be in with a shout of keeping his place for Saturday’s all-important FA Trophy third qualifying round match at home to Harrogate.

The former Stafford Rangers player said: “I was pleased with my performance on Monday because recently I have been on the bench but when you get in you’ve got to play well and keep your shirt.

“I was a little bit unfortunate with the injury and was out for nearly nine weeks which put me back.

“The team have done well since then, which is the main thing, but I have had to bide my time and hopefully am back in now.

“I played the first four games and was getting the sharpness back. Hopefully, I will get more opportunities. I love playing for the club.”

Edwards has been among the goals of late but he was signed to provide the ammunition from the flanks that has been missing in the past.

The 28-year-old said: “That is why I think the manager brought me to the club — dribbling with the ball and getting crosses into the box for other people to score is probably my strength. But obviously it’s nice to get on the scoresheet myself.”

Boss Carl Heeley is pleased with Edwards’ progress and feels, with work, he can be a key player on the flank.

He said: “Danny is technically very good and has pace.

“If at all, his weakness is he tries to have that extra touch too many and beat his man three or four times.

“If we can start to get that out of him, he’ll be a good asset. I thought he did exceptionally well on Monday.”
