VISITING Colwyn Bay for Worcester City’s 2-0 victory last Saturday allowed me to tick off another venue on my non-league tour.
Over the years, I have travelled to the vast majority of grounds in Conference North and South, some several times, but the trip to Llanelian Road was a first and is also one that will stick in the memory longer than most.
It is fair to say that grounds at City’s level vary in quality and facilities are hit-and-miss.
Yet they are all unique and, in their own way, form part of the rich fabric that makes up the semi-professional game.
However, you will go a long way to beat the press box at Colwyn Bay.
While most media benches are situated near to the half-way line, this one is located right next to the corner flag.
I am told this is because it is the only part of the ground a power lead can be stretched to – never mind that you can’t see some of the pitch (which was virtually waterlogged)!
It is also so exposed to the harsh north Wales elements that it led City assistant manager Matt Gardiner to remark that my shivering appearance under hat and scarf resembled Scott of the Antarctic.
Part and parcel of non-league life such obstacles may be, but give me the relative sanctuary of St George’s Lane any day.
On the plus side, at least City won!
