SATURDAY’S final match of the season against Basingstoke gives Worcester City one last chance to salvage some pride.

It would be nice to finish on a high and move up a few places in the league — even if that might paper over a few of the cracks of recent weeks.

We are yet to pick up a point in April but even if we had won every game I would still aim to beat Basingstoke.

It’s the last game of the season, we are at home and hopefully it will be a hot day and we can put on a decent show in front of our fans.

They have given us fantastic support in what has been a very disappointing season.

There’s been a lot wrong on and off the pitch. It’s my job to get it right on the pitch and things have dipped massively in the second half of the campaign.

But the fans are always great and have given us massive support home and away.

At the start of the season we were on fire away from home and it was great to see the travelling supporters enjoying that.

However, since Christmas, after the pay cut and a few players leaving, the points have been scarce compared to the first half of the season.

We knew we would get injuries and suspensions but that doesn’t allow for picking up just 17 points in the second-half of the season.

Our goals total is very poor and that’s something we have to rectify. It’s not just the strikers, we need goals from all over the pitch and we also haven’t scored enough from set-plays.

When Kevin Spencer equalised after coming on as a substitute against Maiden-head last month he said the key to it was his run. If you don’t have the desire to get into the box you won’t score goals and that’s what we haven’t done.

Having spent a year in this league, we have learned what it takes to win games and now we have got to get the players to go and do it.

I am looking forward to getting ready for next season. We have arranged a pre-season friendly against Cheltenham on Saturday, July 11, and they have promised to bring their first team.

The final warm-up game will be against Hinckley on Saturday, August 1, but the others have still to be scheduled.

Meanwhile, Dave Bampton is suspended for Saturday’s match and he has had something of a mixed season.

During the summer friendlies when he first arrived, people could see what he brought to the team with his tackling and link-up play.

But he was injured after two minutes of the first game at Bognor and it’s been a bit-part season since, both through injury and suspensions.

Gary Walker has been a ready-made replacement and I think he’s been one of our best players week in, week out. He’s a young lad and has needed a rest in the last couple of games but he will play at the weekend because he deserves to play in the final match.
