Battling Multoni misses out on points in thriller

WORCESTER City Amateur Boxing Club's promising schoolboy Usman Multoni came up against local fighter Aiden Simons of Solihull ABC at a show in Birmingham.

Boxing for three one-and-a-half minute rounds, both boxers give it their all in an exciting contest.

In a brilliant, crowd-pleasing bout, with both boxers fighting with an absolute desire to win, Multoni refused to be pushed back during the first round.

He took the fight to Simons and non-stop straight punching from the pair during the first two rounds led to a final decisive round with the scores even.

Simons and Multoni stood toe-to-toe in the centre of the ring for the first minute of the third, giving and taking non-stop shots to the head.

During this battle, Simons applied the pressure and trapped Multoni on the ropes. The Worcester boy continued to fight back, but was given a standing eight count.

That decision was enough for the judges to edge their decision towards Simons on points.

The bout was judged as being the best bout of the evening and the pair are set for a re-match on the Worcester Rugby Club show on May 30.

Also boxing on the same Solihull bill was Worcester weltherweight Shane Smith, who beat Billy Mullen of Solihull on points.

Against a taller opponent, Smith found his range early on and connected well with right-hands and left-hooks.

Mullen relied on his counter-punching too much with Smith timing his attacks well.

He continued to box his way inside with double jabs, then releasing over-hand rights to the head of a back-peddling Mullen.

The Solihull boxer had his moments, but the sharper punching from the Worcester fighter was rewarded with a unanamous points win.

Worcester coach Mick Underwood was pleased with both Worcester boxers - Smith for his best display for the club to date and Multoni who showed great determination despite his narrow points defeat.
