Crews to battle on the river

TOP amateur athletes from across the country will be descending on the city on Saturday to compete in Worcester Rowing Club's Spring Regatta.

Competitors aged from 14 to 60 plus will be battling it out over the River Severn course from the road bridge to Pitchcroft.

Around 100 crews, from a far a field as Sussex, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire and Wales, will be involved in an event first contested in the 1840s.

A large contigent of 20 crews is expected from the home club as well as representation from Evesham and Stourport and other West Midlands clubs as teams compete in disciplines from single scull to eight sculls.

The event is one of three main competitions staged annually by Worcester RC.

The club also hosts an Autumn Regatta and the popular Head of the River Race in November.

Spectators can watch Saturday's action for free from anywhere along the length of the course, including the club house, which will be providing a barbecue and bar throughout the day.

The first race is due to start at 9am and the last at around 5pm.
